Focus Sensors in partnership with Costain, Dwr Cymru and Hafren Dyfrdwy are one of the first entries to win the inaugural Innovation in Water Challenge, launched by Ofwat. Our partnership will develop a solution to address one of the largest issues facing the water industry today: leak detection in water networks. The initiative will use unexploited, dark fibres in existing telecommunications cables to localise and detect leaks in water networks allowing them to be rapidly and efficiently rectified.

Focus Sensors, Costain and Dwr Cymru led by Hafren Dyfrdwy will develop leak detection using dark fibres alongside other winning entries, developing various initiatives for different issues within the water industry. Those entries include 14 different water companies as well as a range of other organisations from within and outside the water sector.

Finance and Commercial Director of Focus Sensors, Toby Fisher remarks: “We are thrilled to be working in such a fantastic partnership as part of the Innovation in Water challenge and are keen to get started on applying the techniques we have learnt in other industries for this new application within the water industry.”
