Dr Ed Austin

Founder, Managing Director

Contact Info

Ed is the co-founder of Focus Sensors and has over 20 years’ experience in developing optical sensors. He has been responsible for taking major new innovations from concept to reality.

After leading a number of developments at Southampton University, Ed moved to startup Stingray in 2008. Working with Martin and others he developed a novel optical reservoir monitoring system for the oil and gas industry. Stingray successfully exited to TGS in 2011 ($83m). In 2015 Weizhong and Ed left TGS to form Focus Sensors.

Dr Weizhong Zhao

Founder, Technical Director

Contact Info

Weizhong is the co-founder of Focus Sensors and has 15 years experience working with Optical Sensing systems. He has the technical excellence you would expect of a person with two PhDs.

Weizhong developed, designed and built the initial Fotech fibre optic sensing system before moving to Stringray to join Ed and Martin in the development of a complex permanent reservoir monitoring system designed for long term subsea deployment. This focus at Stingray of building high reliability, robust systems is reflected in the products at Focus Sensors. Weizhong and Ed knew that the old generation of DAS systems needed a complete rehaul to meet the need for high quality, durable, affordable, phase based systems and have a game changing patented product.

Martin Bett

Chairman

Contact Info

Over more than four decades Martin has held leadership roles in a range of businesses from large multinationals (Schlumberger, Toshiba, Wang, QinetiQ) to start-up businesses (Scientific Generics, Landmark Graphics, I-NET, Trade Ranger, Stingray Geophysical). These companies have all leveraged leading-edge technologies.

In 2006 Martin founded, grew and then successfully sold Stingray Geophysical. This business implemented very large-scale fibre optic sensing systems in Oil & Gas and won The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Measurement in Action Award in 2009 and the Team Award in 2010.

Martin holds a degree in Geophysical Sciences from the University of Southampton, an MBA with distinction from IMD, where he was awarded the Alumni Leadership Prize, and the Financial Times Diploma in Non-Executive Directorship.
